Use Roboto in Slack#

Overview#

This guide shows how to connect a Slack workspace to your Roboto organization, link your own account, ask Roboto questions from a channel, and let agents post into Slack. For what the integration is and how it decides who can do what, read Roboto in Slack first.

You need:

A Roboto organization on a premium plan.
Organization admin in Roboto, for the one-time connection and channel approval. Roboto organization members handle everything after that.
Permission in your Slack workspace to install apps, or a Slack admin who will approve the install.

Connect your workspace (admin)#

In the Roboto web app, open Settings → Integrations → Slack.
Click Connect to Slack. Slack opens a popup: choose a workspace and approve the Roboto app’s permissions.
The page now shows the connected workspace. The app is installed, but it is not yet in any channel.
In Slack, invite the app to each channel where you want to use it:

Do this in every channel people will mention @Roboto from, and in every channel you want agents to post into.
Back on the Slack integration page, click Refresh to pick up the channels the app just joined, tick the ones under Approved channels that agents may post into, and click Save. Only outbound posts need this step (see Let agents post to Slack). Mentioning @Roboto works in any channel the app has been invited to, approved or not.

You can connect one workspace to several Roboto organizations: repeat the steps from each organization’s settings. Each organization keeps its own approved-channel list.

Link your Slack account (everyone)#

Each person who asks @Roboto questions links their Slack account to their Roboto account once.

In any channel the app is in, mention it with your question, for example @Roboto which datasets were uploaded yesterday?.
Roboto replies with a message only you can see, containing a Connect my Roboto account link. The link expires after 10 minutes and is spent when you confirm, so you can reopen it until then. Mention @Roboto again for a fresh one.
Open the link, sign in to Roboto if you are not already signed in, check that the Slack account shown is yours, and click Link account.
Roboto picks up the question you already asked and answers it in the thread; you do not need to repeat it.

Read the confirmation page before you confirm: a Slack account can be linked to only one Roboto account, and the link cannot be replaced or removed from the web app. If the Slack account it names is not yours, click Cancel.

Ask Roboto a question#

Post a top-level message in a channel the app is in:

@Roboto which datasets were uploaded yesterday, and did any fail ingestion?

Roboto opens a thread under your message, shows a status line while it works, and posts the answer in the thread. Links in the answer open the dataset, file, or plot in the Roboto web app.

Choosing an organization. If you belong to more than one Roboto organization connected to this workspace, Roboto first asks you privately which organization the thread is about. Pick one, and Roboto announces the choice in the thread and answers from that organization. The thread stays bound to it, so later mentions skip the question. To ask about a different organization, start a new thread.

Following up. Reply in the thread and mention @Roboto again:

Roboto ignores replies that do not mention it, but it still sees them when the next mention arrives, so a discussion between colleagues becomes part of the context. Anyone in the organization can follow up in the same thread, and Roboto remembers the whole conversation no matter who asked.

Inside an existing thread. You can also mention @Roboto in a thread people were already having. Roboto reads the thread so far and answers there.

If Roboto is busy. Mention it while it is still answering in the same thread, and it privately asks you to try again once the current answer is posted.

Continue in the web app#

Every Slack conversation is also a thread in Roboto. Open it from the Open this thread in Roboto link under each answer, or find it under Agents → Threads in the web app. The thread is visible to everyone in the organization and shows the full transcript, including the tools Roboto used and the Slack messages it was shown.

In Roboto the thread is read-only, because it belongs to the Slack conversation. To keep going, fork it: the fork button (a split icon) under any of Roboto’s answers copies the conversation up to that point into a private, writable thread of your own. The Slack thread is unaffected.

Let agents post to Slack#

With at least one channel approved (step 5 of Connect your workspace (admin)), Roboto’s AI can post messages into those channels from any conversation: AI Chat, a launched agent, or a skill.

Ask for it in plain language in AI Chat:

Triage the datasets uploaded today and post a one-paragraph summary with
links to #flight-review.

Or write it into an agent prompt so a recurring job reports to the team. An agent prompt for a daily check might end with:

When you are done, post the summary to #flight-review with a link to each
dataset you flagged.

The AI sees only the approved channels, and Roboto refuses any post to a channel that is not on the list at the moment of posting. Un-tick a channel on the integration page and agents stop posting there immediately. Remove every channel, and conversations that already used the tool keep it, but it refuses every call.

Disconnect#

On Settings → Integrations → Slack, click Disconnect. Agents stop posting immediately, and Roboto clears the approved-channel list. The app stays installed in your Slack workspace, so reconnecting later needs no reinstall. To remove Roboto’s access entirely, also uninstall the app from Slack’s app settings; Slack notifies Roboto, which discards its stored credentials.

Troubleshooting#

Roboto does not respond to a mention. Check that the app has been invited to the channel (/invite @Roboto), and that you mentioned it rather than typing its name. A first mention after an idle period can take a few seconds; if delivery fails, Slack retries.

“This Slack workspace isn’t connected to a Roboto org yet, so there’s nothing for me to answer from.” An organization admin needs to complete Connect your workspace (admin).

“You’re not a member of any Roboto org connected to this workspace, so I can’t look anything up for you here.” Your linked Roboto account is not in an organization this workspace is connected to. Ask an admin of that organization for an invite.

“That link could not be used.” An account-link link expires after 10 minutes, and once confirmed it cannot be used again. Mention @Roboto again to get a new one.

Signing in through Google or SSO dropped you on the home page instead of the confirmation. Go back to the Slack message and open the link again; now that you are signed in, it completes.
